Knitting spandex yarn is known for its exceptional elasticity and tensile strength, making it an ideal material for garments that require stretching while retaining their original shape. The elasticity of spandex comes from the unique molecular structure of the polyurethane polymer's repeating units, which allows the fiber to stretch up to five times its original length without breaking. This considerable stretch means that spandex can provide a comfortable, snug fit for a wide range of body shapes and sizes, making it a versatile and inclusive material.
Spandex yarn has had an undeniable impact on both the fashion and textile industries. Its remarkable stretchiness enables designers to create clothes that are comfortable and flexible, making it a popular choice for activewear and other sportswear. Furthermore, spandex is commonly blended with other fibers, such as cotton, polyester, and nylon, to create fabrics with a mix of stretch, comfort, and durability. These blended fabrics have become ubiquitous in everyday clothing, from jeans and leggings to t-shirts and undergarments.
The size of spandex yarn ranges from 11dtex to 3750dtex. The most commonly used specifications are 20D, 30D, 40D, 70D, 140D, of which 40D is used more than 50%. Paralleling, weft knitting and warp knitting are widely used; The amount of 70D is basically second only to 40D in the past few years, and it is mainly used in covering and knitting; In the past two years, 20D and 30D and other fine denier yarns The proportion of the use of filaments has grown very fast, especially in underwear, socks and circular knitting machines; 140D/210D is widely used in lace, webbing, and socks; Coarse denier silk with larger fineness is mainly used in webbing. Some brands also use spandex extensively in diapers.
How to Knitting Spandex Yarn Is Used
Knitting spandex yarn is never used alone; It is constantly consolidated with another fiber (or strands), normal or man-made. Textures improved with spandex hold the presence of the dominant part fiber.
The sort of texture and it's end utilize decide the sum and kind of spandex required to guarantee ideal execution and style. As meager as 2 percent lycra is sufficient to enhance a texture's development, wrap and shape maintenance, while textures for elite articles of clothing, for example, swimwear and dynamic sportwear may contain as much as 20-30 percent spandex. Weaving or sewing methods, togheter with texture sort and end utilize, decide if spandex yarn is used in an exposed or secured yarn shape.
● Cross section: Spandex filaments are extruded usually from circular orifices, but the evaporation of solvent or the effects of drying may produce non-circular cross-sectional shapes. This may take various forms. In the multi-filament yarns, individual filaments are often fused together in places. The number of filaments in a yarn may be as few as 12 or as many as 50, the linear density of filaments ranges from 0.1 to 3 tex (g/km).
● Density: The density of spandex filaments ranges from 1.15 to 1.32 g/cc, the fibers lower density being based on polyesters.
● Moisture regain: The moisture of fibers from which the surface finish has been removed lies between 0.8 & 1.2%
● Length: It can be of any length. It may be used as filament or staple fiber.
● Color: It has white or nearly white color.
● Luster: It has usually dull luster.
● Strength: Low strength compared to most other synthetic fiber.
● Elasticity: Elastic properties are excellent. This is the outstanding characteristic of the fiber.
● Heat: The heat resistance varies considerably amongst the different degrades over 300 F.
● Flammability: It Burn slowly.
● Electrical conductivity: It has Low electrical conductivity.
● Breaking tenacity: 0.6 to 0.9grams/denier.

Application Areas of Knitting Spandex Yarn
Active-wear
Knitting spandex yarn is a crucial component in many sports and active-wear such as leggings, tights, sports bras, and athletic shorts. Its elasticity helps the garments adhere to the body, allowing for more flexibility of movement.
Compression garments
These garments stimulate blood flow and provide support for muscles whether worn for medicinal or athletic purposes. This includes clothing such as stockings, socks, and compression sleeves.
Casual wear
Some casual wear, like jeans, have a little flexibility since they are manufactured with a cotton and knitting spandex yarn mixture, which can improve comfort and fit.
Performance costumes
Dance-wear, figure skating dresses, and some theatrical costumes use knitting spandex yarn for its flexibility, allowing performers a wide range of motion.
Cosplay & costuming
Due to its form-fitting attributes, individuals who create and design their own costumes for events, conventions often use knitting spandex yarn. For example- spider-man costume, batman costume, superman costume, black panther costume etc.
Shape-wear
Knitting spandex yarn is frequently seen in clothing intended to slim, smooth, or shape the body. This includes clothing such as bodysuits, pantyhose with a control top, and waist cinchers.
Swimwear
Knitting spandex yarn is often incorporated in swimsuits to provide a snug fit and shape retention both in and out of water.
Sock tops
To help socks stay up and not slouch down.
Different Types of Spandex and Application
The amount of spandex we use in general clothes is relatively small. In North America, people use it on women's close-fitting clothes. Usually, people blend spandex with other fibers such as cotton and polyester. In general, spandex usually exists in four forms of bare yarn, core-spun yarn, covered yarn and twisted yarn in textiles.
Bare yarn is 100% spandex yarn. Generally, we never use the naked yarn directly on the fabric. We just co-produce the bare yarn with rival materials and use special equipment for production. Among the products, 22-78Dtex is the main product.
We often add bare spandex yarn when making knitwear. We mainly interweave it with nylon yarn or polyester yarn on a knitting machine. Furthermore, the main products are tights, sportswear, swimsuits, stockings, pantyhose waistbands, surgical bandages, socks, cuffs, warp knitted fabrics, paper diapers, etc.
Spandex core-spun yarn uses spandex yarn as the core. Then we spin it out of one or several non-elastic short fibers (cotton, polyester cotton, acrylic, polyester, etc.) It is not exposed which can fully reflect the surface characteristics of the outer fiber. Moreover, the cotton core-spun yarn fabric has the style, feel and performance of cotton. And the wool core-spun yarn fabric complements the excellent properties of the two fibers. It is not only has good elasticity, but also maintains the high-end feel of the woolen fabric. Similarly, silk core-spun yarn fabric can also reflect the characteristics of natural silk.
We can spin spandex core-spun yarn by ring spinning, air spinning, vortex spinning and other processing methods. The yarn has the advantages of low spinning cost, large yarn count range, wide outsourcing fiber and flexibility. The elastic elongation of the core-spun yarn is 150%-200%. And the amount of spandex is 7%-12%. For example, we can use 40D spandex wrapped around 40S cotton yarn core spun yarn to weave stretch denim, corduroy and knitted fabrics (neckline, cuffs, hem) and other clothing accessories.
The spandex covered yarn uses spandex yarn as the core. Then we use inelastic filament or short fiber yarn to wrap the stretched spandex yarn in a spiral manner. After that ,we got the elstic yarn. According to the number of coating layers and the number of turns per centimetre of the outer layer, we can divide it into single-covered yarn (SCY) and double-covered yarn (DCY).
Covered yarn is a pre-stretched spandex elastic yarn that passes through the center of a hollow spindle to become the core thread. The yarn or filament on the spindle is evenly spirally wound on the spandex as an outer covering yarn, and then synchronously wound. The yarn has the characteristics of large elastic elongation (300%-400%), stiff hand feeling, thick yarn count and high strength. We mostly use it for knitting high-elastic fabrics such as socks, weft-knitted underwear, elastic bands, etc. We use covered yarn widely in spandex processing yarn. It accounts for about 65% of the entire processed yarn type. The outer yarn is mostly polyester, nylon plus elastic or cotton yarn. And We also use polypropylene as the outer yarn.
We also call Ply yarn twisted yarn. Specifically, we twist the stretched elastic spandex edge and two other inelastic yarns to form the yarn. We produce it on a ring twister equipped with a special yarn feeding device. And we mostly use it to weave thick fabrics with medium and low elasticity. The typical fabric is elastic labor cloth and elastic gabardine. Besides, the product is evenly dried and the product is clean. However, the core wire is easy to be exposed. So the hand feel is slightly hard. And it is not easy to make dark products.
How to Use Knitting Spandex Yarn
Knitting spandex yarns are usually used in combination with other filaments, whether they are natural or synthetic. The amount of elasticity of the fabric is determined by the filament used with the spandex. The type of texture and its intended use also play a role in determining the type of yarn to be used. Although adding 2% lycra yarn can impact the properties of the fabric, swimsuits, and sportswear that require a lot of movement and stretch usually use 20-30% spandex. The use of this yarn is also determined by the weaving method and the texture of the fabric.
